Mathematicians worldwide turn their eyes to Norway when the Academy's president announces this year’s Abel Prize: Which mathematician will be honored with the Abel Prize this year? Follow the announcement of the Abel Prize on March 26 at 12:00 PM.
The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters awards one of the world’s most prestigious prizes in mathematics: the Abel Prize. The announcement for the 2025 prize will be made by the Academy's president, Annelin Eriksen.
International Collaboration
This year, the Academy has enlisted British science journalist Timandra Harkness to explain the laureate's work in a popular science format. She will present the 2025 Abel Prize winner in collaboration with the Academy.
Timandra Harkness has contributed to various TV and radio programs, including with the BBC. She has actively worked to communicate and popularize mathematics and statistics, notably through the Royal Statistical Society (RSS). She is the editor of the journal Significance.
Harkness specializes in Big Data and has authored several books on the topic. She is a well-known TV personality and frequent commentator on new technology. Among her radio and TV series on mathematical topics are Five Knots and The Long and Short of Life Expectancy. She has also toured the UK and Australia as a comedian with a focus on the mathematics of death. Her radio series FutureProofing (2015–2019) on the BBC cemented her reputation as one of the UK’s leading communicators of mathematics, technology, and statistics.
The Work of the Abel Committee
The chair of the Abel Committee, Professor Helge Holden, will provide the committee's reasoning for the award. The Abel Committee is entrusted with the honorable task of evaluating worthy nominees for the Abel Prize. The committee submits its recommendation to the Academy's board, which formally approves the decision.
The committee is led by Professor Helge Holden, whose research focuses on differential equations and mathematical physics, particularly hyperbolic conservation laws and integrable systems. He is joined by four internationally renowned mathematicians.
