The Abel Prize award ceremony for 2026 will take place on Tuesday, May 26, at 2:00 PM in the University Aula.
The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters invites you to a formal ceremony that brings together science and art in honour of one of the world’s foremost mathematicians. His Royal Highness Crown Prince Haakon will present the 2026 Abel Prize to Gerd Faltings.
The award ceremony
The Abel Prize award ceremony will be led by Haddy Njie.
Haddy Njie is a Norwegian presenter, journalist, author and artist who has worked extensively with NRK. She has hosted major national and international broadcasts, including the Eurovision Song Contest in Oslo in 2010, and is also known for her work as a writer, singer and storyteller.

President of the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters,
Annelin Eriksen, will join Haddy Njie on stage for a conversation about The Abel Prize and its significance. Helge Holden, Chair of The Abel Prize Committee, will present the committee’s citation and give insight into the reasons behind this year’s choice of laureate.

Reception at the National Theatre
Immediately after the award ceremony, we gather on the second floor of the National Theatre for a reception, where the British science journalist Timandra Harkness will interview the laureate. Harkness is known for communicating and popularising both mathematics and statistics and is one of the UK's leading communicators of mathematical science.
