Minister of Education Kari Nessa Nordtun presents this year’s Holmboe Prize to lecturer Sigrun Melander Vie on behalf of the Norwegian Mathematics Council. She is awarded the Holmboe Prize for her inspiring and motivating teaching in mathematics at Rud Upper Secondary School in Bærum.

"Sigrun Melander Vie engages her students by making mathematics both interesting and relevant. Through real-life examples, she explains mathematical concepts in a way that is easy to understand," according to the jury’s statement.
The Holmboe Prize is a national teaching award that honors one or more mathematics teachers for outstanding teaching in primary or secondary education. Nordtun presents the award on behalf of the Norwegian Mathematics Council. The prize is a collaboration with the Abel Board at the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters.
The Norwegian Mathematics Council also gives an honorable mention to Hanne Eliassen at Alta Upper Secondary School.
Promotes increased student involvement
Sigrun Melander Vie has worked at Rud Upper Secondary School for more than 20 years.
– We are very grateful for her efforts and the impact she has on students and colleagues every single day, says Principal Geir Lindblad of Rud Upper Secondary School.
Students describe a teacher who is always willing to go the extra mile to help them experience mastery and motivation. They value her not just for her teaching, but also for her personal commitment.
Vie is academically strong and sees connections across subjects. She dares to try new methods and involves students in the teaching process, according to the jury’s statement.
Will Meet the Abel Prize Laureate
The ceremony will be a formal occasion, opening with the Abel fanfare and a musical performance by Peblingene, the school choir of Oslo Cathedral School. Cordian Riener, head of the Norwegian Mathematics Council; Ingrid K. Glad, chair of the Abel Board; and Marit Westergaard, Secretary General of the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters, will welcome the Holmboe Prize laureate.
As a special bonus, the Holmboe Prize winner will meet this year’s Abel Prize laureate, Masaki Kashiwara. The winners of the UngeAbel mathematics competition for lower secondary school students will present their project, and the winners of the Abel Competition for upper secondary school students will also participate in the ceremony.
Mathematics is a subject where teachers' qualifications and dedication play a particularly important role in students’ understanding and interest, says Cordian Riener of the Norwegian Mathematics Council. That is why it is especially symbolic that the prize is awarded during Abel Week.
The principal of the laureate’s school, Geir Lindblad from Rud Upper Secondary School, will also be present. The principal of Oslo Cathedral School, Patrick Thomas Stark, and assistant principal Kerstin Dyblie Erdal will serve as hosts.
